DEFINITIONS
Cookies are small tech files that sites visited by users send to their terminals, where they are stored and then retransmitted to the same sites on the next visit. The cookies of the “third parties” are, instead, set by a website other than the one that the user is visiting. This is because on each site there may be elements (images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages of other domains, etc.) that reside on servers other than that of the site visited.
TYPES OF COOKIES
Depending on the characteristics and the use of cookies we can distinguish several categories:
- Technical cookies. Technical cookies are those used for the sole purpose of “carrying out the transmission of certain information on an electronic communications network or as strictly necessary for the provider of an information service to provide services requested explicitly by the subscriber or user” (cf. art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code.) They are not used for other purposes and are generally installed directly by the owner or manager of the website. Cookies can be divided into browsing or session guaranteeing normal navigation and use of the website; analytics cookies, similar to technical cookies, help website owners measure how users interact with content, together with the number of users and how they visit the website; functionality cookies remember choices made by the user in order to improve service. This type of cookie does not require prior consent from the user although it remains mandatory to provide information pursuant to art. 13 of the Code, that the site manager may provide in the manner that he deems most appropriate only if he uses such devices.
- Profiling cookies. Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and offer content in line with the user’s interests or send messages/targeted advertisements. Because of the particular invasiveness that these devices can have in relation to user privacy, the European and Italian law require for the user to be adequately informed on the use of these cookies and able to express prior consent. Art. 122 of the Code refers to them where it provides that “the archiving of information in the terminal equipment of a contracting party or user or access to information already stored are only permitted provided that the contracting party or user has given his consent after being informed in the simplified manner referred to in Article 13, paragraph 3” (art.122, paragraph 1 of the Code.) This website does not use profiling cookies.
“THIRD PARTY” COOKIES
By visiting the following website you may receive cookies from sites managed by other organizations (“third parties”). An example is represented by the presence of “social plugins” for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or LinkedIn, or embedded multimedia content visualization systems such as Youtube, Flikr. Such parts are directly generated by these sites and integrated into the webpage of the visited site. The presence of these plugins involves the transmission of cookies to and from all sites managed by third parties. For the sole purpose of monitoring and improving the performance of the site we use a market product for statistical analysis to detect access to the site. It may use cookies, both permanent and non-permanent, for the purpose of collecting statistical information and information on the “unique visitors” of the site. DURATION OF COOKIES
Some cookies (session cookies) remain active only until the browser is closed or upon execution of any logout command. Other cookies “survive” the closure of the browser and remain available in the user’s next visits. These cookies are called persistent and their duration is set by the server in the moment in which they are created. In some cases there is an expiry, in others the duration is unlimited.
